Sourced through an established art community. Variations in finish and detail form part of the work’s authenticity.
Rock Holes (2008) by Willie Ryder Tjungurrayi is a striking original artwork from the renowned Papunya Tula community, inspired by the network of rock holes and vital water sources found across Country. In Aboriginal culture, rock holes hold deep practical and spiritual significance, serving as essential water points, meeting places, and sites connected to ancestral journeys and Dreaming stories.
The composition is built around an intricate network of concentric circles and connecting pathways, symbolising waterholes and the routes between them. The geometric structure creates a powerful sense of movement and interconnectedness, evoking the mapping of Country through Aboriginal visual storytelling traditions.
Set against a rich deep ochre-red background, the work is elevated by layered cream linework and finely detailed dot accents in red, white, black, and blue, creating remarkable depth and visual rhythm. The strong contrast gives the piece both cultural authenticity and a bold contemporary design presence.
At 63cm x 118cm, the horizontal format makes this an ideal statement piece above consoles, dining settings, sofas, or office spaces. Its strong linear composition works beautifully in modern and architectural interiors.
A highly collectible work that combines cultural storytelling, geometric sophistication, and striking colour contrast, Rock Holes (2008) is a powerful interpretation of Country and one of the most enduring visual motifs in Aboriginal art.
